Kering’ot Purengey is Empuaan’s Community Counsellor.
Kering’ot studied to secondary school level before taking up employment at Kleins Camp, a luxury safari lodge located in the eastern fringes of the Serengeti, close to his home village. During his five years at Kleins Camp Kering’ot worked his way through a series of promotions from stores to administration and accounts. He was also selected by CCAfrica to spend one month at their headquarters in South Africa where he studied on a number of computer courses incorporating lodge management and financial systems. He holds a full, clean driving licence and is fluent in Maa, Swahili and English.
While HIV/AIDS has only recently become a ‘visible’ problem in Maasai areas, Kering’ot has a longstanding interest in the epidemic. During his visit to South Africa he saw, first hand, a community living at a more advanced stage of epidemic and quickly realised that without effect HIV intervention the future of his own community looked bleak. He has played an active part in the development of Empuaan’s stategy from the outset.
